55 GANSEVOORT is pleased to announce the opening of "AARON AUJLA : Aluminum Entrance Conscious of Itself", on view from December 11th through January 7th at the gallery's storefront location.
Aujla uses domestic and industrial materials to construct sculpture that transfigures the character and function of a space. His work, which engages with the modern interior complex, often appears familiar if not completely recognizable. Within an institutional setting, the effect does not simply reflect the world back to the viewer. Instead, it suggests a perceptive and emotional approach to the formal construction of objects as utilitarian and aesthetic entities.
"AARON AUJLA : Aluminum Entrance Conscious of Itself" is the artist's most recent reinterpretation of a space. The plywood placeholder for a recessed entrance mat becomes a sculpture and the void is filled with a site-specific installation.
Aaron Aujla (born 1986, Victoria, British Columbia) earned a BA from the University of Western Ontario in 2007. His work has been subject of solo exhibitions at Clearing (Brooklyn/Brussels) and Steve Turner Contemporary in Los Angeles. In 2013, his works have been in group exhibitions at Galerie Art Concept, Paris; Clearing, Brussels; Brand New Gallery, Milan and Martos Gallery, New York.
The exhibitions at 55 GANSEVOORT are entirely visible, at all hours, by peering through the windowed doors.
